WHEG held their second Traffic Forum at the Methodist Church.  John Waite and Peter Leigh [DCC] briefed WHEG members and supporters on actions taken so far and provided an opportunity to answer questions.  Reports from Kim Percival [Weights and Measures] and local PC Russell Crooks [Derbyshire Constabulary] were also presented.

Actions:

  • WHEG to feedback to PC Crooks further parking problems at Hallam Way and Scargill School - completed 16 March - PC Crooks to hold discussions with the School, parents and residents
  • WHEG to continue to report HGVs over the weight restriction using Station Road - Station Road is now subject to a semi-permanent 7.5 tonne max gross environmental weight restriction [to align with the permanent weight restriction on the villages of West Hallam and Stanley].   Two checks have been carried out on the restriction area since this was put in place, the most recent being on Tuesday 7 October 2008.
  • WHEG to continue to pursue planned improvements to other main roads within the village - click here to read relevant DCC ‘Insight’ newspaper articles
  • DCC to maintain camera safety presence on High Lane.
  • DCC reviewing speed limits on all ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads within next 12 months - 14.7.08 Peter Leigh, DCC Environmental Services, updated WHEG as folows: “The speed limit on the A609 from the Rose and Crown through to Ilkeston has now been reviewed by the DCC Consultants.  They have recommended the 30 mph extension at the western end as it accords with the current Government Guidelines.  No other changes are recommended or proposed.”
  • DCC to look into the possibility of providing ‘right turn only lanes’ and ‘no parking’ double yellow lines at the top of St Wilfrid’s Road - 14.7.08 Peter Leigh, DCC Environmental Services updated WHEG as follows: “We did see if a right turn harbourage could be squeezed in at either St Wilfrids Rd crossroads or the Station Rd crossroads, but without physical widening, they can’t be achieved.  I’ve monitored parking near the junctions, but have not identified any need to introduce any restrictions on parking.”
  • WHPC/DCC provided footpaths near the Storage Depot, Cat & Fiddle Lane - work completed November 2007

Did you know Britain relies more on road freight than other European countries and that operating costs are lower due to lack of road tolls which means lots of work for overseas drivers.

More than 100 lorry drivers are thought to have breached weight restrictions on Derbyshire’s rural roads during the past year, according to Derbyshire County Council.  Checks carried out between April 2007 and April 2008 by the council revealed that 139 drivers were potentially exceeding weight restrictions.  Officers carried out 20 formal enforcement checks and 56 informal checks at new restriction spots.

A survey last year found >60,000 of the 430,000 trucks on UK roads are foreign.  In 2005 >1,000 were involved in crashes resulting in 44 deaths and 1,300 serious injuries.

25% of foreign lorry drivers checked last year were working over the max permitted number of hours.  Romanian drivers were the worst offenders with 40% found to be driving for too long as opposed to 8% of British drivers.
