A Committee was elected at a meeting of West Hallam residents on 24th February 2003 and tasked with raising local awareness of the Shipley West Opencast Planning Application by UK Coal [Ref CM8/899/44].

West Hallam Environmental Group was formally constituted at the first AGM held on 30th April 2003, with a considerably increased brief and range of objectives than just the initial opencast objection.

The West Hallam Environmental Group [WHEG] was therefore established for the benefit of local residents to:

  • stimulate public interest in environmental matters
  • ensure planning applications are sympathetic to the environment
  • secure the protection and enhancement of the environment

The ‘area of benefit’ comprises the Parish of West Hallam in the Borough of Erewash, Derbyshire, and neighbouring parishes.

We currently have approximately 100 members but of course we are always glad to welcome new members.

WHEG is a not-for-profit organisation, with all of it’s actions funded directly by annual membership subscriptions and donations.  Any financial support that you are able to give, however small, will be most welcome and will help us to continue with our work.
